Suleiman, You were so FUNNY. I remember at first being surprised by this. Funny and brave is a rare combination. You’re one of the more memorable people I’ve ever met – I really felt that in the brief moments I shared with you. You are missed.

Suleiman and I once sat on a boat and laughed about curse words, local expressions that rise to the level of poetry. I shared my favorite, a Finnish one involving skiing. He told me an Arabic one that still makes me laugh, a long-winded one involving camels and an oasis. We enjoyed many late-night discussions about love and creativity. His reasons for creating the beautiful work he did still makes me tear up. His depths of both despair and joy stand out—he was so fiercely open, fiercely funny, always ready to talk about the darkness and the light, reminding me that the tragedies of life may be all the more reason to remember to laugh with our loved ones while we still can.

Rest in peace buddy, you will be missed

Memories of you challenge me to live with gusto, with kindness and with compassion as you did. Thank you Suleiman, the world is less a hero but the spirit world has an additional hero in you.

Rest in peace, Suleiman. You come to mind when I think of this poem:

I only have a minute.

Sixty seconds in it.

Forced upon me, I did not choose it,

But I know that I must use it.

Give account if I abuse it.

Suffer, if I lose it.

Only a tiny little minute,

But eternity is in it.

HI Suleiman – I hope you are listening somewhere. We met on the bus on the way to whale watching in Monterey in 2015 with a bunch of boisterous TED fellows. You were the most bad-ass looking person on the bus and also the funniest. I thought you were the coolest person I had met that day, on day filled meeting hundreds of amazing people.

Your optimism and work inspired me then and it still does. I will miss you.

Take care,
Sean

I will always remember your generosity and help Suleiman when you helped arrange receiving my niece-in-law Baraah for treatment in Jordan after she got badly burnt in an attack on her home in Yemen.

She did not survive then despite all your efforts but she is now with you in spirit on the other side, in a world better and kinder than what we have today.

Thank you

Your friend Walid

You are always with us, inspiring us, making us laugh, taking a load off. I love you forever, dark meat.

You were the best of us. Love you so much.

Habibi Suleiman, I miss your magnanimous laugh, your boundless heart, your quick mind, your devilish smile, and your wise, evolved perspective on life. You were like the little brother I always wanted and never had. Your memory, inspiration, and work live on in all of us. To quote the Buddhist philosopher-poet Joanna Macy: “The great secret of death, and perhaps its deepest connection with us, is this: in taking from us a being we have loved and venerated, death does not wound us without, at the same time, lifting us toward a more perfect understanding of this being and of ourselves.” Love you, always.
